Rotors play an essential role in many machines and are often the main source of vibrations. Rotordynamic analyses are therefore a focal point for the activities of DELTA JS.
Rotordynamics has some peculiarities compared to the dynamics of other structures. Bearings play an important role and are in many cases essential for the damping. Due to the gyroscopic effect and due to fluid film bearings the behaviour is speed dependent. On the other hand the characteristics of magnetic bearings are primarily not speed dependent but frequency dependent, what requires other special modelling techniques. Rotors can become unstable. Typical forced excitations for lateral vibrations are unbalances. Torsional vibrations are primarily excited by pulsating torques of electric drives or generators.
